In the first year, we spend 4/5 days at college and sometimes one day at the site. 2nd year we have 1 day at college and 4 days at the site. On site we carry out different things including maintenance of machines or using machinery such as lathes to produce parts.
I have learnt how to maintain a different types of basic machinery, how to use certain tools and other engineering based things. I have learnt about mechanical principles and why certain things need to be worked out. I know how to read technical drawings in order to create a part or a piece of work.
I enjoy it because i get to work in a group of people who actually want to be here. The people are chosen not just by results but by how active they are and how they quickly learn new things to be able to complete the job at a high level but quickly.
We have set things to do at college today and set dates for assignment. When working we have specific positions we stay at for 3 months and then move. At college we have set things to do each day so for example, Monday we have maintenance and Wednesday we have Cnc
We see our supervisor at least once a week so we can ask questions and get given any news. we can easily contact them by text. When on site we will get support from other workers as well as the employer to make sure we are confident enough to complete the work at a high level
The teacher/trainer gives us all the help we need and makes it obvious that we can ask questions when we are stuck. regular assistance is provided. When on site, the trainer is open for any questions at all time in case we are worried about something or do not know well enough how to do something
The qualification we receive at the end of the 4 years was picked to allow us to complete training whilst not being on site and being able to gain skills to which we can expand when we get on site to work on the machinery there. If we went in with no experience is would be a hard time.
Some times there is things on like soon we have a football match between people at the site set up by the apprentices. It is a 6 a side tournament that is raising money for charity, When on site more, we will get to know more about any other activities from work
Yes
Because they are one of the best in the UK due to the fact that we get regular support, good job roles and good qualification from it. They don't pick someone on just results but on skills they already have from outside of school time such as volunteering which brings confidence in speaking.
Don't stress when completing the tests they provide after the application. You don't need to complete them all but it is best to complete as many as you can correctly than all but more are wrong. You should apply even if you don't have the best results because it isn't all about them.
