My role as an apprentice is to understand how engineering projects function and implementing projects into process/design improvements. On a day to day basis, I learn about the site I work at what products and processes are implemented and the impact engineering projects and changes can bring to production on site.
Having worked on site, I have learnt a number of different skills. This includes working in teams, where there may be problems to be solved or decisions that must be made as a team. I have learnt key engineering principles in which my workplace relies on in order to function as required by the client.
I have enjoyed all aspects of the programme. I have met people whilst working in new environments. I have developed skills I would never learn anywhere else. The work on site is both interesting and challenging, providing a good understanding of the business functions and production requirements. I have been supported in all of my enrichment activities, helping develop my skills even further.
I understand what is required from me in my apprenticeship. I know where I am in terms of my work-based learning qualifications and what placements I have to come in the future. In these placements, I aim to complete all goals set for me by both my placement and line manager.
I have received a lot of support in all of tasks and activities. I participate in numerous enrichment activities, for which I have received support from my line manager and placement manager. Any difficulties I may have in work, I can consolidate with my line managers in order to resolve or redirect any issues I may have.
Although completing my qualifications in both work and college, I do not receive as much support in college compared to my workplace. However, changes to the engineering department has increased the standard of training provided by Coleg Gwent. Previous qualifications with the same training provider have not been supportive or well structured whatsoever.
My college course does not align fully with my career in BAE systems. The principles taught within my college course allows more structured decisions to be made in my workplace. However, the course is varied, with teaching excelled in some areas and less so in others. This is an issue developed from previous years of "learning" at the college.
There are many activities available to apprentices and colleagues at BAE systems. These include gym facilities, team events, charity/fundraising activities and challenges. This allows apprentices and colleagues to work collaboratively to solve problems and continuously build bonds with colleagues both in and out of the engineering work place. This has proven to be another beneficial activity that has developed my skills.
Yes
The opportunities available and helpful colleagues makes this company a safe and interesting company to work for. The activities I have been given would never be available working for any other company. I believe BAE systems is aimed at allowing people to excel in their professions. Additionally, the company is focussed on safety, making it a safe environment to work.
You must be passionate to work for a company like this. It is a good place for you to develop your skills. Understanding the aims of the company is important as focus is what the company looks for. Be willing to learn new things and accept whatever challenges may come around, because every day will be different.
