Currently, I attend Glasgow Clyde College (Anniesland Campus) full time with the aim of completing an HNC in Engineering Systems to enable me to progress through my apprenticeship.l with BAE Systems. I’m also doing an SVQ level 2 at the college which will be completed at the end of this academic year
Through various units and modules being completed at college, I have learned many aspects of electrical wiring and how to interpret the drawings and complete the circuit practically. I have also enjoyed learning how to TIG weld which requires a lot of focus. I have also furthered my knowledge of CAD software and improved my ability.
I thoroughly enjoy my time at Glasgow Clyde college, I find all the classes challenging and interesting and believe it is enabling me to build a strong foundation to my engineering knowledge in order to progress. I get on with all my fellow apprentices and classmates and this helps create a good experience.
I feel Glasgow Clyde College have provided me with an excellent facility to carry out my SVQ level 2 and and all required resources are available. In addition to the SVQ2, our class modules are all relevant to creating a strong foundation. The classes included in the Engineering System give me a brief understanding of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to help me choose which discipline to further.
My employer and my training officer are always available when I require assistance and of this I am extremely grateful. It adds to the fantastic opportunity I have been given within BAE Systems. The communication between the college and my employer is very good and we are helped by both.
Our training provider is Glasgow Clyde college and they are in regular contact with my employer. All resources and teaching material are available online for me if I require and If ever we fall behind in anything, I imagine we would be assisted and given extra help if required along the way.
The HNC in engineering systems is designed to give me an insight into electrical and mechanical engineering and this will help me to choose which discipline I want to move into in the future. However, I have not worked in the business yet so haven’t put any theory into practice.
When we began with BAE Systems, we were taken to Outward Bound (Loch Eil) for a team building experience. Over the course of the week we enhanced our communication, problem solving and team working skills by carrying out a number of activities while all doing a different job within the team.
Yes
I have found that BAE Systems is an excellent company to work for. They have given me an excellent opportunity to earn a competitive salary while putting me through my qualifications. We have access to a number of company perks from the beginning and we will have opportunities to progress in the business.
I would advise others to be sure they are interested in working in this environment. It is fast paced and and a very prestigious job. Ensure they know what the roll involves and what is required of the individual. Be prepared for a busy academic year but putting the work in is worth it.
