At college full time. Completed a HNC in engineering systems at Glasgow Clyde college, Anniesland. I start at 9am and finish at 4:15pm. Once I have a achieved my SVQ level 3, I will be able to begin working within the business. This will be completed by the end of the academic year
During my time at he college, I have learned a vast amount of new skills. A lot of our units consists of physics, which I never done in previous education. I have been able to learn this for the first time. We have also spent some time doing pipe fitting and welding which are new skills to me
I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship. It has been tough for myself, based on the fact I don’t have a physics background, but I feel I have coped well with the challenge. It’s also great having a good bunch of boys to complete the apprenticeship with. I look forward to entering the business.
I feel the programme is well organised in certain ways, however, we have log books to complete for our SVQ level 3, and due to the amount of classes and assessments, we are left with nearly no time to work on these. I feel the programme would be perfect if we had some times dedicated to this
I feel I received a lot of support from my employer. BAE systems being such a big company, invest a lot of money and time in their apprentices. We are able to email/text/phone our training officer if we have any problems to discuss. He is able to answer most of the questions or solve the issues we have
Our training and learning is mostly put on our senior lecturer at college, however, we are able to contact our training officer if we do have any issues. Our senior lecturer, frequently checks on us to make sure everything is alright with our classes, make sure we aren’t struggling and provide support when need be.
It would be difficult to answer this question as we haven’t had experience of working within the business as of yet. We have been full time, Monday to Friday, in Glasgow Clyde college, Anniesland campus. However, I can say that I work very well in a team, and hope to apply this to my work within the business when I have the chance.
We attending an outward bound experience within the business. This consisted of a lot of teamwork and problem solving through various tasks such as abseiling, camping and hill walking. It was great as it was near the start of our apprenticeship so it brought our group a lot closer together
Yes
The company invests so much time and money into its youth, and I feel provides great opportunities for workers to progress and make a comfortable living. The company itself is constantly growing which is fantastic for people like myself to progress to bigger things. I would recommend the company to many people, and have already helped a few friends when applying for a job in the business.
Ensure that you are interested in the line of business and background of the company. Have a open mind when taking on various tasks and assessments. Be hard working, committed and enjoy your work. The work will be fast passed and requires a lot of teamwork, so be prepared for the challenge.
