During my day to day, I complete complex drawings on CAD and also model and move components in a live model of the ship. I also often attend meetings where I am needed and have enjoyed liaising with my team and making new friends and colleagues. On Fridays, we are allowed to complete college work at our desks.
I have developed many new skills since being here. I have completed two placements so far, and both have provided me with skills I have learned and that can be transferrable between the two placements. I found this extremely useful, as I wasn't going into the placement blind as I had previous knowledge.
I find the programme enjoyable as it feels good to be a part of something so important. Its not everyday you get to work on something as important as a warship and I am doing that. I have enjoyed learning many new skills that can be useful in but also outwith my apprenticeship.
I feel the programme is structured well as we all have a "Placement Plan" that guides us all the way through our apprenticeship, taking us through all the available placements in our chosen engineering speciality. It feels good to be able to get a taste of the different departments before you have to make your own final decision.
There is support from BAE wherever and whenever we require it. We know who the trained specialists are and where to find them, so its a good feeling to know they are on hand should we need them. I also value praise where needed and I am pleased to say that when I have done a good job, I am told that, this makes me feel extremely valuable.
Again the support is there, if we are struggling with college work there are plenty of professionals around me in the office that can help. Also, as I said previously, the Friday we get to work on college really helps to have the extra time to study and work on assignments.
Definitely helps, the year I have done previous to entering the office, meant I had a knowledge to the subject I was going into. This made it feel like less of a jump going from education into office life. Due to myself having little ship knowledge before the apprenticeship, my training provider taught me the basics, this helped me to understand the 'lingo' during meetings when talking about ships.
There are many extra curricular activities to take part it. For example, I was thrilled to be asked to take part in a ship tour for the new 'First Sea Lord'. This made me feel important to be specially asked to attend this task and have put my name forward for any additional activities.
Yes
It is a great company to be a part of and a great opportunity to be a part of something so massive. For someone that came here straight after school, it is great to get in a full time wage so early in my career. Not only that, but also the qualifications are invaluable as these can be used outwith your apprenticeship if you decide to change company or career path later in life.
Read the company website and familiarise yourself with all of the company's assets. what the company do, their values and what products we build. Also have a brief understanding of ship technology and what our ships capabilities are. Incorporate the values into the application, include Trusted, Innovative and Bold in your answers.
