  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to complete set tasks by my line manager. This might include being involved in meetings and computer work, while using software like Microsoft Word and Excel. Four days a week I am in an office environment working from a laptop and one day a week I am at college.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to navigate various types of software and developed my communication skills while in meetings. Before starting work in the office I had no prior experience with excel and now feel I am proficient when using it to complete certain tasks that have been set for me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am thoroughly enjoying the programme so far as my current task is allowing me to learn new skills and gain experience that I can use in the future. I am enjoying my progression through college as I work towards my second HNC due to be completed at the end of this year.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a lack in pre-emptive communication with organising people attending events where the deadline is the same day contacted and this has caused many people to lose out on opportunities. This can easily be fixed if organized ahead of time properly and would probably find more attending the events.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As I am in an office environment and am surrounded by other employees all the time who are experienced, I feel comfortable to ask questions of them for anything I get stuck on. I am finding the 12 week reviews that I get are helpful to keep my training officer aware of my current position.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As I am in a college environment for a full day once a week I find it easy to ask lecturers for advice on the specific parts of the subject I am stuck on. With the portfolio being online I find it easy to access and take any opportunity I get to fill in more of it.

    9/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that working towards a qualification parallel to working in the office makes it easier to see to links in knowledge than first year when we were in college full time. For example, Information Technology: Applications Software 1 requires us to have/learn skills with working in Excel and Word .

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are sometimes bake sales and fundraisers that we can get involved in by volunteering to go around people in the office looking for donations. Other times there are events hosted by different parts of the company to raise awareness like quality master classes of safety first events with the opportunity to get free branded flasks or pins for you lanyard.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAE Systems because so far I have enjoyed being a part of the company as I have had the opportunity to be involved in various activities that I would have missed if I had just gone straight to university or a job and not chosen an apprenticeship.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • For my interview I needed to have background knowledge of the basic areas and functions on a ship as well as name a few types, and needed to name some of their yards such as Portsmouth. I also needed to do a five minute presentation, the topic for this was chosen out of 4/5 recommendations in the email containing the date of the interview.
