I am a commercial underwriter in which I evaluate and analysis risk in relation to insuring property and liability policies and enables me to get out and about - meeting brokers, visiting clients and conducting surveys. No two days are the same in that you meet new people, make new friends and no two risks are the same. As an apprentice I am earning a salary, gaining industry qualifications and experience. Further to the above, I have 20% off the job dedicated to study. Moreover, I am surrounded by experience of all ages in that as an apprentice you always have the support of those around you. The apprenticeship is completed with Kaplan who provide more then enough support in which they contact you regularly asking how you getting on and provide you with more then you need source of resources. Currently I am working on a renewable energy project in view of the future of sustainable energy and to help those who wish to contribute to help create this. In this I am responsible with policies that involves some sort of renewable energy element and to provide the best terms and cover for their respective risks.
As I am a level 3 insurance practitioner apprentice I am currently working towards my CII qualification and my License in insurance. In this, I work with Kaplan to prepare me for my exams for the CII and RSA provide internal training to help supplement this. Further to this, just working on the job you gain a good understanding of insurance from learning from them around you and gain/develop you skills such as communication, confidence (when doing presentations or meeting new people) etc...
Personally, I have most enjoyed the culture at RSA. In this, my team are amazing and you make a lot of friend that you could say are for life. Further to the above, the work is hugely varied and makes you think rather then you just putting numbers in a table or essentially being a call centre (which I originally thought it was). The atmosphere is quite relaxed and friendly in that you can be friends with everyone and they will help you if you need it. Moreover, as with other places I have been RSA differs from the really strict corporate and micro managing in that they tend to leave you to your own devises and if you need help to bring it up.
The structure of the apprenticeship is laid out from the start with a milestone chart showing where you need to be at each period of the apprenticeship. Further to this, they provide you with internal and external training via kaplan and support you through your apprenticeship. Studying consists of 20% of the job and home study after work in which all the resources you will need will be provided to you. I regularly meet with my mentor/talent coach to see how I am progressing and have meeting with my Team leader/line manager of how I am doing if I need more time to study due to an exam coming up etc... There is also kaplan app in which provides you with resources and dates to which you need to complete work and revision by.
My employer supports me all the way through my apprenticeship. In this I have apprenticeship call with my HR team every month in which all those on the program have a conference call to discussed anything of concern and how things are going. My Team Leader/Manager has regular catch ups on how I am doing and provide me with support when I need to study or revise etc... I meet my mentor every 6 weeks and have a catch up call each month to see how i am progressing. Kaplan provide all the resources that you'll need and if you still understand something you can always ask and they will make a support session for you.
Kaplan have regular meeting in relation to our progress and how we are doing. Further to this they help us develop our inter personal skills and behavior skills. Kaplan provide all the resources that you'll need and if you still understand something you can always ask and they will make a support session for you.

Yes
It is a great opportunity that many would pass up due to the conception around insurance. However, whilst working here there is a great culture that anyone would enjoy. The work is varied and there is a lot of progression route in different area that you may wish to pursue.
In relation to the interview, just be yourself they aren't super strict in the framing of the questions and you can have a conversation rather than question answer interview. The assessment days typically aim you to show your team work skills and to see how you work under pressure. Always be open to change when working here as there will always be an opportunity around the corner.
