I am currently a trainee risk consultant a role which I started back in August 2019 after nearly 6 years of underwriting with RSA. My current role is heavily weighted to my personal development to be come a fully fledged risk consultant for the company. At this time I am working through internal modules with RSA which incorporates reading and coursework to be marked and observing risk consultants complete site visits to pick up on how best to complete a consultation with a client. The role of a risk consultation is prevent losses occurring by providing advice to customers.
At this time in my role I am going through a steep learning curve hence i would say I've learnt many new skills and certainly built on skills I already had. In particular technical knowledge of fire protection methods. With regards to my apprenticeship I am still in the early stages but the module I am currently studying advanced underwriting I would deem this to be developing my already extensive knowledge of the function.
I have joined the programme to obtain my professional qualifications and hopefully learn more about the insurance market. I haven't considered enjoyment more a tool to develop myself.
My initial trainer wasn't the greatest but this has now been changed and I've seen a huge difference since the new lady has got on board. Very organised and clear with what is required
My employer provide me with sufficient time to complete my apprenticeship.
They support me with my coursework completion but limited support towards my CII qualifications.
I see the coursework part of my apprenticeship as tick box to get the apprenticeship funding. My only real interest is studying for my professional qualifications.
Yes but this organised by individuals rather than the company more often than not.
Yes
Throughout my career with RSA they have been receptive to my feedback and actually created roles for me to further my career. In the past 20 years I am not aware of anybody transferring over from underwriting to risk consulting and they have made it happen for me. That is an employer who is willing to develop individuals even if they cannot instantly provide much benefit to the company.
The company is huge make the most of it do not let yourself become pigeonholed.
