My role as an electrical apprentice is to aid the maintenance department for electrical work onsite. Day-to-day I work with a mentor and learn about how different processes and electrical systems work onsite and how to correctly maintain these. I am being shown how to appropriately and correctly fault find on specific site equipment.
Yes, I have learnt new skills as my time as an apprentice as well as developing existing and look forward to developing new skills as I proceed. I have developed my installation skills and knowledge to be more specific for my job role and have learnt new skills surrounding working in heavy industry.
I am enjoying my apprenticeship working with tarmac as I have not worked in a heavy industry before so it is a very challenging and great environment to work in. The department I am working with were very welcoming and happy to have me on board and the company culture I have so far experienced has been good.
My apprenticeship is well organised, I received on site inductions and training immediately and have had further training organised for me. I have been made aware of where I can get support if needed and how to go about asking for further training. The tasks I am given are within my capabilities and challenge my knowledge of the work area.
From my employer I have received support from the HR department when starting m role as well as my manager when learning about my role. I have a mentor who I work with on a day-to-day basis and gain support from them for the tasks I am given. I am aware of where I can go for further support for different things and am encouraged and supported in my work.
I have not received as much support as I thought I would get from my training provider but know I can ask for it if needs be. My company is working with the training provider to change this and assess where gaps are and how any issues can be solved.
I feel that the qualification I am receiving through my training provider is, in part, relevant to my job role. I do not feel that with my current knowledge and understanding of my role, the training provider has contributed much although I understand how the theory I have learnt fits into my job role.
I do not currently partake in and extra-curricular activities with my workplace but I am aware of what opportunities are available for me. In my workplace my company is encouraging myself and my coworkers to partake in a cycle to work scheme and there are company team days that I can attend with coworkers. My company also invests in the local community as much as it can.
Yes
I would recommend Tarmac to a friend as I have found the workplace to be a very enjoyable and encouraging place to be. The role I have been given can be challenging at times but it is a great place to learn new skills in an environment I have not worked in before.
The tips and advice I would give to others applying to Tarmac would include researching the role and environment - the cement and lime industry is different than I thought it would be and the environment can be physically challenging at times, but if you can stand a bit of dust and a lot of steps, it is a nice place to work.
