  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Adjustment of insurance claims within the Marine Department. My role involves high value, complex/legal cases that we often instruct third party surveyors or lawyers. The work is split between regional portfolios and the Lloyds London Market System. I liase with brokers and insured's to gather the necessary documentation in order to review the claim and its quantum.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt better time management skills as the course was very demanding whilst still trying to fulfil my day to day role commitments. As I was in a senior role before I started my CII qualification, I have built on my existing knowledge and learnt about others areas of insurance that I haven't touched previously.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme was very demanding on my time - I was led to believe upon sign up that you were given books to revise for 3 exams and that would be it. I did not know the course would contain so much coursework and that the End Point Portfolio Assessment and Knowledge Discussion would be so demanding in its criteria.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The worksheets and test questions on the MyKap App were very poor. They were not up to date with the textbooks provided and I was often tested on irrelevant material. The revision materials provided by the CII Revision Mate were much more useful. If you are not self motivated then this is not the apprenticeship for you.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer were very flexible and gave me 5 hours per week to complete 'on the job' training. They also supported all of my 121 meetings with my Kaplan Coach and provided support when I asked.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I had regular 121 meetings and phone catch ups with my Kaplan coach. However, I had to be the one to drive these meetings a lot of the time. I can imagine it would be quite easy for your learning to grind to a halt and for the system to forget about your ongoing qualification commitments.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don't believe it has added anything onto my job performance. It has added an additional qualification to my CV and if I ever wanted another job in the insurance industry, the CII qualification is usually a pre-requisite to any job interview. It has also boosted my performance rating within RSA.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are usually social events that take place every month - quizzes, bake sales, treasure hunts etc. We also have a Summer Party and a Christmas Party every year. Professional networking events are usually catered for each department - in Marine we attend panel lawyer seminars and Marine Associations talks with surveyors.

  • 9a. Would you recommend RSA Insurance Ltd to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Flexibility of working hours. Friendly colleagues. Great progression opportunities and RSA do support you if you want to develop yourself professionally. Excellent travel opportunities if you seek them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSA Insurance Ltd?
  • Research the brand values from the internet. Be aware of what RSA's competitors are doing in the insurance market and what challenges RSA may face in the future.
