Working as a wind turbine technician I work offshore on the servicing and troubleshooting teams for the 7MW DD turbines. This includes various technical tasks to keep each turbine maintained and producing power. This apprenticeship provides a practical experience as well as off the job training.
Through this apprenticeship I have learned many new skills as well as developed existing skills. For example, I understood electrical and hydraulic diagrams before this apprenticeship, however with on the job training in troubleshooting teams I have been able to put this skill to use and develop this further.
I have highly enjoyed the programme as it provides experience and develops my knowledge in this industry
The programme was well structured where I was able to be put through college for my first 2 years before getting practical training for the job. After this I was then placed onto site where I can experience the job first hand.
My employer supplies constant support whenever I have a question or problem to help me understand and overcome what I may be struggling with.
In my third year I am working towards an NVQ qualification. This is done online and I meet with my instructor on occasion to go over this work. This can cause support to be limited.
My qualifications from college and through my NVQ I have gained basic technician knowledge which I can then use and develop at work.
There are company wide activities which we can sign up to and get involved in. This allows me to have new experiences and meet others within the company.
