  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis, I create, review and use technical drawings relating to components used on submarines. This requires working as part of a large team, to deadlines and taking accountability for my work. I work with a variety of systems, meaning each day is different - over time, I accrue a lot of experience with a wide range of technologies/systems.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As part of my apprenticeship, I have learnt how systems integrate in the workplace, as well as learning academic skills through university. Due to the complexity of the systems I work with, I worked alongside existing team members at first to become familiar with the processes used for creation, and use of technical documentation. As a result, I gained the skills to interpret requirements and turn them into a complete electrical system solution.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • There is a lot to like about my role - from getting to work with new technology, to feeling proud with the work I produce. I get along well with my placement team, and find they are supportive and offer help - meaning I never feel stuck or helpless. Day to day work is always different, and this means the work I do is always engaging.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Initially, there were issues at the start of my apprenticeship, meaning we were delayed from entering our job roles for 3/4 months. With the issues in the past now, there is a clearer idea of the trajectory for my apprenticeship, and I know placements have been lined up for years to come.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is given at every opportunity, from assistance with university work, to issues in placement. All members of the early careers department are understanding and actively seek to resolve any issues. Placement teams are understanding of the work we have to complete as apprentices', and are flexible around on-going academic events like coursework deadlines.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support is given when required at university, although is responsive, not proactive. This means occasionally, it is too late to intervene to resolve and issue, and has to be dealt with afterwards. Typically, time is allocated to speak with tutors after lectures and help can be scheduled to ensure concepts are thoroughly understood.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The theory taught at university is directly used in my day to day job role, and over time, I have understood more of the systems involved in my job role as the theory behind them have been covered in lectures. Since my apprenticeship is technical, once the background theory has been learnt, it can be adapted to suit the tasks required in my job role.

    9/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • BAE SYSTEMS actively encourage taking part in STEM events to educate younger students about the importance of these skills. There are always events scheduled to take part in to expand on essential skills, and many opportunities are provided that give apprentices complete control - e.g. assessment centres for potential apprentice applicants are organised and run by existing apprentices.

    10/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There is a lot going on within the company, meaning a job role never becomes monotonous. This helps ensure day to day work is always engaging. Working with submarines is a source of pride and national importance - I feel as though I am part of something larger and have a small role in part of keeping the UK safe.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • The business understands the importance of technical skills, and eagerness to learn. Anyone applying who is ready to face a challenge and learn new things will be ideal.
