Two days a week Iam in college studying towards my HNC qualification. The remainder of the week is spent in a work placement that currently is roating every 3 months until September. The work I do in placement is 'real' and contributes to a team, this is good as it makes it feal like you can genuinly make an impact.
During my first six weeks on the scheme I have been involved in various different training courses that were aimed at developing my knowledge and understandng of different aspects of the business. These courses included some LEAN and H & S programmes that helped me have a broader range of skills when I did eventually enter the business.
I feel the team involved in the organising apprenticeship have done a fantastic job at making the entire experience as enjoyable as possible. So far I have enjoyed attending college and my work placement, other staff make you feel welcomed and part of the team. Most people are friendly and willing to help where ever possible.
The scheme got off to a slow start, however, this was down to scurity clearance issues. I feel the company adapted well to this and put in place useful 6 weeks programme of activities that helped develop skills/ knowledge when we eventually did go into the business.
The company are usually willing to listen to any concerns you may have. They are also very strong on mental and physical well-being and regularly host events to support this cause. They also have put on events to do with financial management to help with managing money outide of work.
Those working at the training provider are always willing to help if you have any questions. The class sizes are small so there is allways a chance to ask any questions. More resources could prehaps be provided in the run up to exams for revision purposes, for example practice questions and answers, past papers ect.
The course helps build my knowledge and undertstanding of various systems/ business protocols that can be taken into my workplace. If I have questions regarding work and how it relates to the subject that is being tought then then those delivering the content are always willing to help in a friendly way.
Every Thursay a group of early careers members organise a 7-a-side football match. This is enjoyable and helps you with networking/ getting to know those in your workplace better. More events outside of work could be organised to further this as it helps with meeting a broader range of people.

Overall I have enjoyed my first 6 months at BAE systems. I feel you are well looked after when compared with other companies and there are plenty of employee incentives. The company is also often willing to help fund various qualifications or stretch activities that you may want to get involved in.
Ensure you prepare for the assessment day thoroughly, research the business; learn about the products, history and what they do. Make sure you act professionally, however, do not be try someone you are not. Those preforming the interview, in my case, were friendly and made the whole process more enjoyable.
