My job role as a Telecommunications engineer varies on a day to day basis. Some days I may be climbing a pole to get a customer in service and others I may be running a new internal wire on a new provide. Each day is unique to its own.
I’ve learnt how to become an engineer and I’m still learning every single day. It’s like riding a bike metaphorically speaking, is never forget what I’ve learnt and along the way I learn different things each day as the my knowledge progresses at my current job role.
I enjoy meeting different types of people on a day to day basis as well as interacting within different environments in which I never thought I could. I enjoy learning new things and keeping up to date in world affairs. I have become a lot more confident since joining Openreach.
The program is very well structured and organised. We get days where we have time to complete our NVQ work and take photos as evidence. As well as this we can ask for additional absences to finish parts of our work of just get general help on a task we might not understand.
The support we get from Openreach is a high amount, the set days help us get the work done. And there is lots of info online on out intranet to help. Also we can ask for additional absences to finish parts of our work of just get general help on a task we might not understand.
The support we receive is high and within our training we were briefed on some aspects. One thing that could improve is the amount of support we get when entering our first few weeks with the company. It didn’t seem to be enough info at the start in our training.
My qualification helps me preform better as when I’m going about my day to day job I’m able to take photos and gain extra information on certain jobs I’m carrying out. This helps me gain knowledge and further skills for my line of work and job title.
There has been a couple since I started with Openreach but I feel like this could be improved on especially for group moral. The one event for Christmas we had was very nice and I got to meet other engineers I didn’t even know were on our patch at all.

I would recommend to a friend and I already have because of the employe benefits, pension and just general enjoyment of the job. It’s different every day. Sometimes you have bad days sometimes you have easy days and it is always always different from the last day you were in.
I would say focus on the customer do you research and learn a bit of background info about the company as this will help you stand out and understand basic training and knowledge. Be confident and outgoing and show dedication to the job a this will benefit you in the long run.
