I am a telecommunications engineer for openreach and am trained as a fibre jointer working on business Ethernet circuits. this involves building the network and working on existing plant. there are no two days the same and work for different customers all the time. I enjoy my job and role.
I have learned many new skills including how our network works, how to joint and splice, how to communicate with customers, managers, our control and other engineers in order to give the best experience for our customers and to be able to work effectively as a team. I have also gained confidence when speaking to people.
i enjoy doing my job however had many issues with my NVQ assessors. the first one having no interest and our second one was very helpful either. overall i felt like i was sort of left to my own device and the assessor didn't really have much knowledge which wasn't very good
i didn't feel like there was any organisation or structure at all. it was a case of here are a few days for you to do your NVQ and it was the luck of the draw if an assessor actually turned up. this was very demoralising and did not encourage me at all
i received lots of support from my manager, he was ace in helping chase up the multiple issues we were having and ensuring we had adequate help and enough days for us to complete it within. if we needed anything we had it but i do not feel the assessors themselves were much help
not very much, not very much and it was always a constant labour of chasing the assessor up to get a response, i understand they may be busy but i had cases of sending stuff off and not getting a reply in 10 days so had to chase to be immediately told whatever i had done was fine, making me feel it actually hadn't been read
i don't feel that much of the NVQ i did in any way contributes to my role bar using word to write up a55's and reports and some email skills but apart from that there is very little i see applicable to my role out in the field
i do believe there are opportunities for these sort of things however this isn't something im particularly interested in so haven't actually chased this up to find out whats available. if in the future i change my mind im sure i would be able to find something suited to me
Yes
very exciting and rewarding place to work. i enjoy what i do even when it gets difficult, however there are great bits of support all around from senior engineers, managers and team mates. there is something new to learn all the time and i think this is a great stimulus
it doesn't matter if you have no telecoms background. you are supported from the very beginning and people have come from every walk of life you can think of so don't be afraid of learning something new. there are plenty of opportunities to take on new roles and move forward
