I work in the manufacturing engineering/technology department where we look for ways to improve manufacturing processes through the use of technology. We receive work streams from areas of the business looking to make improvements in either a process or a product.
I am developing my stakeholder management skills as well as time keeping as my schedule is rather busy. I am continuing to develop my communication skills as the business has a vast workforce and each individual is different.
I enjoy the programme as it allows me to study towards a degree free of charge and provides constant on the job learning. Placements are rotated so you get a true feel of the business in different departments and you can go out and see the product which is truly unique.
Intitially there were some hiccups as this is the first time that the business has offered a manufacturing engineering degree apprenticeship. The business responed to these really well and our feedback was listened to on ways to improve it for next years intake.
My employer provides support every step of the way. There are regular meetings for catchups where any issues can be brought up and addressed. There are also 12 week reviews where progress can be reviewed and issues addressed.
Support from college is adequate but there is an emphasis on self study. The tutors, although willing to help can be a bit dismissive sometimes.
The qualification is geared towards mechanical engineering as there is no manufacturing engineering degree. It has been designed to incorporate both and does provide the skills needed to perform in my role.
BAE systems offers many activities. They encourage you to get involved with stretch activities and there are many to choose from. This often involves helping out at school in STEM related activities. Placement teams are very welcoming and do socialise outside of work.
Yes
They offer great career prospects, a fantastic salary and the apprenticeships give the chance to learn valuable skills and meet many different people who will help you progress. They encourage you to push outside of your comfort zone so that you can develop as a person
Keep applying if you get knocked back first time. They receive a massive amount of applications and depending on the programme may not have many spots whereas others may have loads so if you get turned down the first time do not be disheartened, keep trying.
