I am an assistant construction manager looking after roofs on my project. I manage a variety of different roofing works from waterproofing to landscaping. I complete daily site diaries and daily activity briefing meetings also. I have previously been on other projects managing other types of work such as fit out, logistics and cladding close out.
I have learnt lots of new skills such as how to manage people as well as technical skills such as learning how to pour and finish concrete and shoring excavations. As well as learning new skills my job has developed the skills I learnt in college by giving me a better understanding of programmes and different types of drawings.
I enjoy my programme because no two days are the same and I get to work out on site. When I left college I never saw myself in an office sat at a computer, I wanted to get out on site and learn which this programme has enabled me to do.
The programme is well organised with a training schedule sent out every year for a variety of different technical training courses. As well as this we have regular reviews with emerging talent HR members and emerging talent directors. There is also a portfolio of competencies to fill out which helps to guide learning and development.
I have received support when I need it. The best support I have had is with my line managers as they really get to know you and want to help and develop my career. The emerging talent HR team are also really supportive helping us by arranging training for areas we need to learn about and are always at the end of the phone if you need help
My training providers (South Essex College and Upskill) were both helpful with my respective qualifications. Upskill in particular kept in regular email contact throughout my NVQ level 6 to guide me with completing units. I am currently working on my CIOB professional qualification and they have been excellent in sending out guidance and holding training sessions on how to complete the professional review.
My NVQ level 6 has been really important, it has helped me with my confidence in performing my day to day work on site. In my NVQ there were topics such as health and safety, to complete the topics you have to gain evidence from work you do on site.
There are lots of extra curricular activities that you can get involved with through projects. One of the most important is volunteering. Through volunteering I have been to give a presentation at a primary school about my job. At my current project there are activities such as yoga and exercise classes but activities really vary between projects.
Yes
I would recommend Mace to a friend as there are plenty of different opportunities to choose from. Whilst I am a construction trainee, in my intake there were also MEP and quantity surveying trainees. There are opportunities in consultancy as well as construction so there really is something to suit everyone.
Be prepared for hard work, there is a lot to studying and carrying out your day job! It is time consuming and can be difficult but is certainly worth it in the long run for your career. What you put in effort wise is worth it as you learn so much more!
