I am a commercial apprentice, and my day to day role consists of aiding my colleagues with various tasks across the project I am assigned to - such as providing Interim Statement of Accounts, helping to manage the change process and assisting with the procurement/oversight of packages on the job.
I have learnt many new skills whilst working for Mace, including financial management, online skills such as making use of internal document and cost management systems like Conject. Additionally, I have gained experience and exposure throughout the construction industry and have learnt technical skills relating to my job. Furthermore I have developed existing skills that will become more and more relevant as time goes on
The programme offered is varied in its structure, comprising of internal training, site visits and on the job learning, coupled with university education. This makes each week varied and enjoyable - which is exactly what was sought to begin with. The apprenticeship team in particular are approachable and friendly, and can be relied on for any concerns or suggestions in relation to getting training that is desired.
The structure is very well organised, which is a credit to the apprenticeship team. There are many different activities planned throughout the academic year that aim to provide good training and development opportunities. The team are well organised and plan things throughout the year well in advance. The only thing I would change is that the buddy system could be pushed harder.
I receive support from my employer in many ways. I have had supportive and knowledgeable line managers from the offset who are willing to assist you in any way possible. They are eager to share their knowledge and help with your development. Furthermore we are all assigned a portfolio assessor - a document that aims to help you work towards gaining your accreditation from a professional body. I am also given time to study whilst at work (if I have completed any urgent work needed) which is an additional benefit as it allows me to do well both at work and at university.
The university is helpful in providing resources such as online e-books, access to the construction information service and an extensive library that is at our disposal whenever required. They have also been good in asking us to upload to continuous professional development portfolios which will help when looking to gain accreditation. However the level of engagement during lectures and timetabling could be improved.
My qualification helps me to understand things that will be built upon within a particular situation
Yes - there are many opportunities that a can be seized, they are mostly project based and tend to revolve around happiness and wellbeing at work. For example we have an after-work games match planned, and are allocated volunteering days by the company to give back to the communities around our project
Yes
Mace is a growing organisation that heavily invests in its people as its most important assets. I feel that this has been reflected in my time at Mace. They have exciting projects and a proud history - fostering values that are important to me and providing opportunities in a variety of sectors and countries. Finally, Mace have done their best to make all of us apprentices feel welcomed.
Really investigate the role you are applying for before you apply to it as there are various names for various jobs in the construction industry, and get stuck in when you start... Don't be afraid to ask for more/less work and help!
