  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I assist in all tasks given to me by my team leader, and fill out paperwork, contribute to overall working, as well as learning most days about the job I will be joining into.

    9/10

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a magnitude of new skills, specialised into my field of work (railway signalling). The other skills I have gained can be used in other businesses and in other walks of life.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme immensely, with the learning and the overall tasks in the job being intriguing and very interesting as well. I have a dislike in having to compete for the job, but I understand its part in this job.

    8/10

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Reasonably well, some training which has been scheduled to be taking place gets cancelled relatively close to starting times of the same course. This isn't too bad if the training to be learnt isn't in the local area, but it does mean we miss out on valuable information.

    8/10

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • All the support I could ever need. Some support took me until I had issues with the time left to complete the tasks needed for a deadline, but with assistance from my employer, I was able to achieve what needed to be done in the time remaining.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A great amount of support, all trainers provided me with enough knowledge and help to be able to work toward my qualifications in a effective manner.

    8/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe the qualification will help me better understand the job role I will be going into. But in terms of other aspects I will need more hands on experience to be able to be better at my role.

    8/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some sport activities available to join in with, mainly running and football if you have the interest. In terms of other activities, there isn't much in the way of them unfortunately, I believe this is due to the general age of the workforce.

    7/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Not only is the job rewarding in the wealth of knowledge and experience obtained from the apprenticeship as a whole, but I have quickly formed a mentor relationship with my team leader, which is helping me thrive

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • Apply quickly and make sure to come into the application process with some knowledge on some of the types of disciplines within the organisation, as these will be crucial to you further down the line.
