In my day to day role, installing circuits (alcatel, cisco). fibre preparations in headend. faulting copper lines. Dealing with high value customers by maintaining a professional conduct and vocab. Communication within team to distribute workload and identify the best response and approach to a fault. Van administrations, health and safety, etc.
I've learned a considerable amount of skills during my time at virgin media that range from technical (such as configuring routers or switches), teamwork abilities (effective communication) and punctuality by ensuring you're at a customer site for an agreed time to maintain a good view of Virgin Media.
I enjoy my work in Virgin Media considerably as it provides new challenges every single day and it is never the same. Each day I come into work, the idea that I will likely be shown something completely new or unseen before provides me with a large range of training opportunities
Virgin Media as a company have been very good and supportive during the apprenticeship - albeit with multiple caveats and bumps on the way. Our training provider (GKA) seemed to have been a poor choice - however our own training facilities in Birmingham allows employees to physically interact with kit they're being trained on
Virgin Media gave us the maximum amount of support they could give us by giving the apprentices study days where it doesn't affect the teams performance and constantly looking for resources to use for our exams. We have a couple of points of contact that could advise us regardless of the situation.
As mentioned before, we had trainers that had compiled resources before attending training in Birmingham so we could focus on the areas we struggled on. From this, the utilisation of tools like kahoot and matrix skills trackers could highlight specifically where we need to improve. Overall, Virgin Media have been good in providing training
We believed that GKA were too bogged down with other companies and should not have taken on the 2017 Virgin Media apprentices as a result. Mentors missing phone call appointments they had set, late in remarking work and little to no support in regards to our day to day role and exams.
There are multiple events held at Virgin Media to get involved in. Monthly fundraisers occur in a region by region basis as well as sparkle awards for the best performing within the company. There is always opportunity to extra curricular and the such as the business is very encouraging of doing so
Yes
I would recommend Virgin Media to a friend because of the potential progressions, freedom with an expectation to do your job as well as an incredibly friendly workforce. The learning opportunities surpass many of the previous employers I've been with and has allowed me to progress even further in this industry.
Apply with an open mind with the willingness to learn and complete tasks under pressure. If you are unsuccessful in your application, it is encouraged to apply for different roles within the business. Assessment days consist of a maths examination, basic practical exam (i.e. basic configuration of a router), interview and presentation.
