First year college based, attending lectures in different subjects: Maths, electronics, PLCs and Robotics and pneumatics. working towards HNC and HND then ultimately a degree. Work on electrical projects, such as wiring in enclosures, to first build and test circuits then fault find on them. PLC involves writing and testing code for a PLC rig.
Yes, so far this apprenticeship has really improved my electronics and computer skills. I was new to PLCs and Pneumatics so I have learnt loads in regards to this field over the last few months. coming from a maths and science background, the maths assignments have helped to concrete my maths skills.
Very enjoyable program. Currently completing first week in the job role during the college half term period and it's been very good to see the business and where i will fit in when i finish the training course and move properly into the apprenticeship. College is enjoyable because of the new skills that i am continuing to learn
well organised program in the sense that we are learning new things relevant to our job. however the program is run through a different company than who i will be working for so isn't always tailored exactly to the skills we will need when in the job role. although this isn't necessarily a bad thing as it will make us better engineers as a whole.
Lots of support. There is lots of time given for us to complete assignment work. Time to work with different departments for extra learning and support on the job whilst working alongside engineers. There is lots of training provided, both internal and external.
Lots, any time that is needed to be spent on assignment work is allowed.
TIA programming course through Siemens helps to learn programming for PLCs that we use at work and also general PLC based skills. The HNC/HND and degree provide as good overview of general electrical engineering skills and a deeper understanding into automation related things.
I have not seen this side of work yet due to COVID, however I hope that after restrictions are lifted there will be.
Yes
It's an excellent place to work with a huge amount of resources available to help you to develop. It's a good atmosphere and the course allows me to gain professional qualifications whilst also gaining work experience.
