  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as audit trainee means going on different audits each week, often on site but some can be done remotely. Tasks vary day to day, generally completing audits, interviewing staff and reviewing documents, writing reports and benchmarking data in order to add value to the opinion we provide to clients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • We are constantly being trained at BDO which is really fantastic. We learn completely new skills in audit around various subjects such as risk, report writing and data analysis, whilst also broadening our external skills. Throughout the role I've developed my skills as a communicator and analytical thinker through interactions with clients and managers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the BDO program. I wasn't sure what to expect moving into a new industry but it's been a great experience from start and hopefully to finish. I've met a lot of new people and am constantly learning new things and getting involved in my industry.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is really well structured, you start off with two weeks in college to prepare for your first exams and then you go to an internally led week away learning more specifically about your role and internal training is then spread throughout the year with your studies going alongside.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My managers have been amazing, providing support from day one and making sure I know that I can come to them if I need anything. They're really good at providing feedback and there is a review structure in place to ensure that you have a proper review with your manager twice a year.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Lots of support from BPP. You get two weeks in college initially with a dedicated tutor and then you have the online portal that you can go to alongside that. After you've got the hang of it for the next few exams you just have the online portal but this is full of information to get you through.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • For me my role is Internal Audit so quite different to my qualification however I feel that I'm getting a really thorough background training which will not only help me in the company but also if I ever wanted to move around within the industry or into a new sector.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The team are always getting together for different socials and team days are made a priority. There are also regular socials within the office and some that are set up by an external company to help you network with other grads or accountants from other companies. You definitely are encouraged to make friends and get to know people.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BDO has really welcomed me and didn't feel at all intimidating. The work is interesting and the work life balance is unparalleled. I'm really excited to launch my career with this company and see where it can take me. I'd wholeheartedly recommend working here to anyone I know.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • Be yourself. This is one of our key values. Get to know the company, there is plenty of information on the website for you to go and have a look at. Also get to know the sector that you are applying for, if you're going for something more specific.
