My current role is different to the one I started with when I joined as an apprentice. I was initially working as a business administrator in Mortgage Operations, dealing with the day to day administration and maintenance of live mortgage accounts. I have since moved to the Society's Lending team, where I assess and underwrite residential mortgage applications.
During my time at the Society I have learned a great deal about the life cycle of a mortgage, from the initial DIP and application stage to the final reconciliation and redemption process. This has greatly enhanced my knowledge of the business. I have also developed existing skills such as decision making and time management, as well as gaining in overall confidence.
I do enjoy the programme generally, and feel that it has benefited me in my employment at the Society. I do however think that some of the course material is a little abstract or not entirely relevant to the work I do day to day - but on the whole I do enjoy taking part in the programme.
The programme itself does have a clear structure and this was made clear right from the beginning. Deadlines are regularly set for work to be completed and the way the modules are assessed and what will be required has always been made very clear. Regular meetings are also arranged with the tutor which does help.
I feel I receive very good support from my employer - despite now working in a very busy and fast paced department I am always given sufficient time to complete my work and attend meetings as necessary. At the beginning of the course I was buddied with a mentor who was an experienced manager at the Society which helped me in settling in.
I feel I receive sufficient support from the training provider in terms of working towards the qualifications - they have provided plenty of course material and resources to help with the modules and topics being studied. In addition my tutor is available to help with any questions and queries I might have, including outside of fixed meetings.
I feel that the qualification (NVQ L3 Business Administration) did help me to perform better in my previous role as a Business Administrator, as this was a job role that I had no previous experience of. Some of the areas covered, such as business structure and how change is managed related directly to my role. This is less so in my current role - but I do feel it was beneficial for my previous role.
Yes - the Society has a staff association which regularly organises and hosts various events for staff to take part in - the same also happens on my department. In addition all staff (including apprentices) are entitled to take two days each year to volunteer, which helps contribute to their development and to help the local community.
Yes
The Society is an up and coming organisation and is an excellent place to work with plenty of opportunity for progression - the location in Newcastle city centre is also excellent.
I think the most important this is to show how you, in your potential role, can personally work towards the Society's purpose of connecting communities with a better financial future - this is what the Society is all about. It also helps to take a look at the organisation's behaviours and values and see how you relate to them.
