Progressing the Design and Build of Nuclear Submarines by supporting engineering design work. Can involve shadowing, training courses and assisting the completion of work through liaising with other engineers and other departments, through the attendance of meetings to attain the required knowledge and information. work can be designing or supportive document writing.
I have learnt and developed numerous skills during the graduate scheme. Through completing real engineering problems I have progressed my Technical Knowledge and through working with suppliers and having visibility of contracts I have understood more about business needs and Corporate Knowledge. other key skills include: Leadership Confidence Teamwork Technical report writing
I enjoy the work life balance of the role. Flexi-time enables me to work my hours at times which suit me best. Furthermore the job enables me to work on some of the most complex engineering projects in the world, so the opportunity for development is huge. Other benefits include the opportunity to travel and the many other financial opportunities offered by the company including a share scheme.
There is a clear structure to the programme with clear end goal, however placements within the graduate scheme are left to last minute to plan. Also large amount of disruption in scheme due to the company changing the structure completely for subsequent intake years. However good support is provided when needed.
Support is readily available from BAE, there are regular communications pointing out such. There are groups we can attend where we can voice are concerns, whether it is work related, personal or financial. There is also a regular newsletter which mentions things we can do to support ourselves mentally in the work place.
We had regular modules every 2 months which lasted for a 1 week duration. During this week all the support we needed was given and we were pointed to areas where we can receive further support if required. Lecturers were also easily accessible by email and always happy to help.
The course is not very technical so I do not see a great benefit in performing an engineering role. I have seen some crossover in my day to day role with the course content but, the course however may come to be beneficial in the future as I progress my career and move towards more managerial roles.
There is a lack of company organised events for social activities, it is more so down to individual employees to organise there own events with colleagues. The company should do more here to ensure teams know and get on with each other so team work can increase and so too productivity.

They should research the company well so they know what BAE is currently working on. They should also find what they are passionate about in BAE and find real life examples of how they have the skills to help them thrive in a role within BAE. They should also ensure they have no moral conflict in working in defence.
