  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I look after the employer brand for Mitchells & Butlers, using storytelling to help potential applicants understand what it's like to work at the organisation, from our employees themselves, with the aim to make us the employer of choice within the hospitality industry. I also manage our social media accounts, business closure/uncertainty reactions and bringing our employee value proposition to life within the organisation.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My apprenticeship has taught me a number of new skills as well as developing my existing skillset. Mitchells & Butlers have a fantastic array of internal training opportunities which have really helped me to build on my learnings from our workshops. Most recently I've attended sessions all about employee relations. I've also attended the CIPD conference in London. I've learnt so much about wider HR and the set up of HR and strategy within M&B which will not only be useful for the role that I am currently in, but also for the future.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my programme. It provides an opportunity to continuously learn. There are a great number of people at M&B completing the same apprenticeship, so this provides a real community feel and there is always somebody to help should you need it. My manager has been fantastic in allowing me to use my 20% OTJ hours for whatever development that I want. I also thoroughly enjoy meeting with my cohort every 6 weeks and learning about their workplaces and how they differ. The apprenticeship exceeds any initial expectations that I had and i thoroughly enjoy it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well structured. It started with a strong induction, and we have 6 weekly training courses booked in all the way until the completion of my apprenticeship. The Crosby team have been fantastic and are really supportive. The new learning pathway means that you've got everything you need at your fingertips online so there is no confusion as to where to go when you need anything. The internal support structure within M&B has also been brilliant.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • M&B have been fantastic. The dedicated apprentice team were on hand at the beginning and throughout my apprenticeship to answer any questions. The whole business is more than happy to help you when you're topic falls outside of your typical area of work. Mentors/coaches are readily available and my line manager has played a great support role in the completion of my apprenticeship. I couldn't ask for more from M&B, they have honestly been outstanding.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Crosby are brilliant at providing support. They always set you up for success whenever you're given an assignment, running through what the assessors are looking for you to demonstrate (because the CIPD wording is often confusing). They are always on hand should you need support and get back to you within a very timely manner. The tutors are so supportive that you know you could message them with any question and they would be happy to help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My apprenticeship helps me to better understand a lot of the reasons behind why we do what we do as an HR team at Mitchells & Butlers. It also prompted me to have greater involvement with the setting of my own objectives, and question any work that doesn't fit with the wider strategy of the organisation. I feel that as a result of my studies, not only am I more prepared to complete my own role but I also understand a lot more about our industry, other industries & wider HR in general.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. Every payday Friday there is a new 'Friday night social' that has been organised by a team of employees, within the office. The theme changes every month. The socials are organised by the social committee which organises activities throughout the year. Every year there are also a number of charity events that you can get involved in such as a 5 a side football competition and charity golf day. There are also teams set up within the office such as the yoga club which happens once a week as well as the lunchtime running club.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mitchells & Butlers to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a brilliant organisation with a fantastic company culture where we are all passionate about food, drink and delivering great experiences for guests! They have been so encouraging for me to learn whilst at work, in order to stretch and develop myself to progress. The learning opportunities are second to none and if you've got a hunger to progress, you get the opportunity to do so.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells & Butlers?
  • I would say be yourself, personality is so important within the industry and M&B that you need to show who you really are. Don't be afraid of the interview or assessment days, everybody is so friendly and just wants to make sure that we're right for you as much as ensuring that you're right for us. Any previous hospitality experience is always a bonus!
