Seminars and break out sessions to increase our employability. We had talks from current and past apprentices which helped give me and idea of the desired skill set. Additionally we got to network with and learn from people who are employed by the company. this was a hands on approach and a useful change from the classroom setting.
The day gave me an idea of how an application to an apprenticeship would work. This will definitely be useful for my future. A group question and answer session also increased by confidence in a professional setting. I also got to learn about M&G as a company which was interesting and beneficial.
I did enjoy the day however I am not sure all of the content covered was strictly relevant to me. I think the emphasis was placed too firmly on non-university paths whereas I am more interested in the option of doing an entry level apprenticeship as a gap year. That is how it could have been more enjoyable.
The day ran very smoothly and a well scheduled timetable showed that the day was well organised. the staff adapted well to an unexpected fire alarm and it did not greatly hinder the overall organisation of the day. It was a very busy and full day so we were not quite able to have enough time for a tour which is the only area of improvement in organisation.
I was given an authentic impression of life in an M&G office. it had a very modern and progressive attitude to work spaces and dress code. All employees were casually dressed so that they could be comfortable and increase their efficiency in the workplace. Hence, it seemed like a supportive work environment.
I came out of my work experience with the newly formed idea of doing an apprenticeship in my gap year but I cannot say that the day fully aided me in deciding on a future career path. However, this cannot be blamed on M&G as a future career path is a large decision to make and requires more than one day!
I was not paid for this work experience but then again it wasn't the setting in which I would expect to be paid. Snacks were generously provided and I didn't have any expenses that would have required reimbursing because I travelled in a school bus to and from the event.
This aspect was well catered to as we had talks from employees as well as current and past apprentices. On top of that, we had the opportunity to ask questions and network in small groups away from the large scale seminars. it was interesting to meet so many different people.
Yes
It was a well run and useful day, especially if you are considering a non-university pathway into professional life. i gained lots of information from the day and would recommend M&G for their unique and modern workplace attitude, in so far as casual dress code and dynamic work arrangements.
I heard about this opportunity from my economics teacher so I would recommend approaching your teachers about future M&G events. on top of that, I am sure you can find information about M&G careers events and apply to them online if the former method is not applicable to you.
