  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Craft engineer apprentice, this involves helping the gutters on the shop floor to complete their work packages whilst learning how to use different tooling and machinery, working towards doing a package yourself. This could be from working on the smallest aircraft that we manufacture to working on the largest. A lot of the jobs are very similar across the whole range

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have both learnt new skills and developed some of my existing skills. Not only do you learn new skills in regards to using tools and different machines. You also learn how to speak to people and how speaking and asking questions can really help when you come to do something yourself

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme. This is because the company looks after us and there are many benefits of working here at Airbus. Not only do we get many holidays and our shutdown period, we also get a Friday off as an apprentice and this is used to complete and college and NVQ work

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised and structured. On the first day we were told and it was explained to us how the next 3 years would work and what we would complete each year. For example the first year was based at the training facility in coleg cambria but the next two are based at the factory with day release to college

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive a lot of support from our employer. They are always there to help and give any support that’s needed, all we have to do is pick up the phone or go to see them and explain something. They always give as much help as possible and if they can’t help then they will refer you to somebody who can

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive a good amount of support from our training provider. Not only do they go through everything during class to make sure everyone understands they also have a google classroom which all the world and presentations is put into for you to go through yourself and read over. If you don’t understand something they are always very welcoming when going to ask a question

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the things we learn when doing our qualification really emphasises how serious our job is and enables you to understand that the smallest problem could potentially bring an aircraft out of the sky. This helps and ensures that everybody knows if they make a mistake it’s okay to say so

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are many different activities to get involved in. These are things such as “gen A” a group of apprentices run this and they organise all sorts of different fundraisers and days out to bring the apprentices together and get us team building. Not only do they do fun things like that they also organise trips to have a look around Manchester airport

  • 9a. Would you recommend Airbus to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend a friend to airbus as in my opinion it’s a great company to work for and I really enjoy working here. When I’m at work I feel safe and happy, these are two very key things for me. I always look forward to coming into work

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Airbus?
  • When applying for airbus ensure you do some research about the company before hand as this will really help when you come to doing interviews as you can give some information about the company to show that you are interested and wanting to learn more. I would also say try your best to give as many examples from your previous work experience as possible
