As a degree apprentice everyday brings new experiences we rotate around the business every 4 months which allows us to achieve a variety of skills and see how different functions and departments of this massive company works whilst also creating some strong networks, it also allows you to get day release one day a week for college.
Since starting my apprenticeship I have gained skills which before beginning my apprenticeship i never would have thought I could such as improved confidence which has boosted skills such as leadership, stronger communication and better stakeholder management. Another skill I have learnt is risk management as I did a placement there and it proper gives you a real look into what it is and why it is important to the company.
My programme is mostly enjoyable as you are treated like a college rather than a learner and are given the respect and authority required whilst still understanding that you are there to progress and develop there is also a good social side as in college you get to spend time with everyone whose on your course.
The programme started off a bit rocky when I started due to new government legislation surrounding apprenticeships but staff were very helpful and always kept us informed throughout. It has now got to a place where I feel comfortable that the work to college structure is understood and fits well.
We are very well supported throughout our apprenticeship from our line manager who sorts out working hours etc. to our functional lead who is mainly about continuing our development to get the KSBs we need when we leave, we are also provided with a skills coach who aids us with any queries we have.
The training provider who we have for college one day a week is keen for us to do the best we can, they deliver key content which is relevant to the job we do and also follows the APM professional body which is a qualification we need to achieve as well as the degree.
The qualification we achieve is clearly linked to the work we do and this shows on the job as the content we learn comes up here there and everywhere within the job we do and is linked to the knowledge competencies we have to gain in order to pass the apprenticeship.
As part of the apprenticeship you are allocated 20% a week for out of work learning some activities you can get involved in are training courses and stretch assignments which include becoming a stem ambassador, and various others allow you to get involved with schools and colleges helping develop the next generation.
