  • As I am an apprentice in training I provide support for other CAD engineers within the department. Tasks are set that will train me on the CAD software used by the company. The eventual day to day work I will be doing is routing wiring harnesses on CATIA V5 and examining the harness on visualisation software.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship a lot. There is a lot of learning and growth involved. There are a lot of technical skills that I have picked up along the way. I have learnt that there are many things that are not considered by the user of a vehicle and that need to be considered by designers. Learning all these new skills makes for an enjoyable programme.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship is structured well overall. Things that need to get done get done in terms of academic achievement. However at the start mile stones within the project were unclear. As the apprenticeship goes on the mile stones become clearer. Modules and yearly timings are given just before the start of the year which is very helpful.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is really supportive in terms of development within the company and with the academic side of the apprenticeship. From the academic side there are tutorials if you are struggling with some of the work you are doing at college. My manager at work supports me completely, I have conversations with him if I need additional support.

  • Advice I would give to other applying for this apprenticeship is knowing what you want to do first. Knowing what sort of engineering you want to be and what pathway or sector you would like to work in. Questioning everything is always a good start if you do not understand anything you should ask and question why something is done in a certain way.
