  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a chef, my job involves; receiving and putting away of deliveries and orders. Cooking to spec, making sure I am doing all within my ability to make sure food is served within the 10 minute target time. Cleaning and general care of the kitchen. Record keeping with the K.S.K.B (Kitchen book) regarding due diligence.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I believe the best skill I have learnt in my current role is to be more aware of cooking times and how to manage my timings with food better. Say if a sausage takes 8 mins to cook, what else could I be getting on with. for example, start plating up, getting other dishes prepared, etc.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme so far as I am eager to learn and progress within my job role and put what I have learned into practice. Showing that I can confidently explain and do all tasks expected of me with the knowledge I need and have learned. This will help me with my team to work better and more efficiently.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe my programme is structured well to not bombard learners with a load of work to do, on top of their normal workload. This helps me out as I can balance my course, my work life, and my personal life evenly with less stress and more positivity and maximizing productivity.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I believe the help and support from my employer is seriously lacking. I say this as it has taken me over 4 months to be provided with the proper documentation that I need to be able to work on and progress on my course. Once I explained this to the management, I was told that it wasn't their problem.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The help and support I have received from my learning instructor is great! My instructor is very understanding with time frames, me picking up more shifts and hours, falling behind and any issues that arise. He takes time out to help me and guide me through areas that I need more work and guidance on. This helps me immensely.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe that my qualification through my training provider helps me perform better in my role as I am working on my knowledge of all aspect of my job. This helps me to be able to help out, advise, guide and train up staff members who need the help in areas they are unsure of.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are currently no extra-curricular activities at my work. We used to have a lads five a side football team that was in a league, but now with the majority of the staff been incidents, they usually prefer now to go out drinking at the weekends and evenings instead of engaging in work-related activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Whitbread to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have experienced enough with the way that the management team treat and speak to their staff. It is expected of you to come in whenever there needs a shift covering. People at the site are screaming out for hours and the management would rather call in someone from a different site to help out rather than help out the staff members that are helping them out. Overall the mindset of the management needs adjusting, as if there is an issue, I have been told '"If you don't like it, you know where the door is, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]" I think this is an absolutely disgusting way of treating and speaking to staff. This is what divides and ruins the respect of higher management.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Whitbread?
  • If you can tolerate getting made out to feel and spoken to as if you are worth nothing, people [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] about you, managers only telling you what they think you want to hear to try to keep you quiet for a bit then, by all means, apply. Remember your self-worth, and that you deserve to be treated like a human being, not just another number in the system.
