I started as a credit officer on Intermediary mortgages, assessing applications, interacting with brokers and ensuring that applications fit within the bank's risk appetite as well as ensuring customers are treated fairly. Since then, I have been promoted and now manage a team of underwriters with the same goal.
I think that the apprenticeship primarily built on existing skills. The CertRBCB qualification was extremely useful and improved my confidence around general banking. The structure of the apprenticeship focussed heavily on 'on the job', learning and putting learned skills into practice. In addition, new skills, learned on the job were used to contribute to the apprenticeship.
I found the programme very enjoyable with a good balance between the structure of the apprenticeship and the application of learning to my everyday role. Although the person delivering the apprenticeship changed halfway through the process, both [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] were well organised and made the apprenticeship something fun to do.
As I said previously, there was a good balance between the structure of the apprenticeship and the application of learning to my everyday role. The system side, provided by KnowledgePool was the only downside - there were constant changes to the structure of the online platform which proved to be more of a hinderance than a help.
The 20% 'on the job' learning was sometimes difficult to arrange due to pressures around the everyday department workload. Management have been extremely supportive however any meetings, coaching sessions, and statements have been completed without any problems at all. Overall, I felt that I received a good level of support.
[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was an absolutely fantastic coach in this respect, drawing from a deep knowledge and years of experience in the industry meant that she was able to coach me in a detailed and focussed way, ensuring that I was able to go into the testing for the CertRBCB full of confidence.
The CertRBCB allows me to relate my role to the wider banking sphere as well ensuring that everything that I do is compliant with relevant regulatory guidance. The CertRBCB shows to other colleagues that I have been through a qualification process and carries a certain amount of respect with it.
There is a sports club attached to HSBC although this is not something that I have used yet. In terms of socialising, there is a great team spirit on the department that I currently work on and there are always events being organised. The department have recently ramped up their fundraising and this is something that I'm keen to get more involved in.
Yes
HSBC is a great place to work. Aside from the team spirit mentioned earlier, pay is good, and variable pay is also excellent. Healthcare, income protection, life assurance and a generous pension are also employer funded. In addition, the prestige of working for one of the largest banks in the world is also a factor.
When applying to HSBC, previous experience in banking is not required. HSBC looks for competencies and transferrable skills. Interviews are competency based and examples in the 'STAR' (Situation, Task, Action, Resolution) should be thought about before attending an interview. If you're unsure about applying, don't be - Go for it!
