On a day to day basis I will interact with clients, managers and junior staff with the goal of providing a quality audit. Communication includes face to face conversations and meetings, emails, skype and phone calls. Outside of that I use Microsoft excel to investigate clients accounts and figures to ensure they are correct for their stakeholders.
I have learnt lots of new personal skills including client interaction, leading teams and working as part of a team, and various other communication based skills. I have also significantly improved my computer skills through the use of Microsoft office, mainly excel on a daily basis. I have also learned lots of accounting knowledge from my ICAEW course at Kaplan.
As in any job there are high and low days. However working with different teams most weeks and travelling to lots of different places has definitely made the programme more enjoyable. I have met lots of new interesting people and been to lots of different and interesting places which makes the role a lot more enjoyable.
The structure of the programme is very clear from the outset with the number of exams and well these will be sat being made very clear, there is also a clear qualification date to work towards. If there are any set backs from this there are also made very clear.
At EY everyone has a counsellor. This is how you go to with any problems or issues. This has proved to be very helpful. Your counsellor is always a Manager or above therefore they generally understand the issues you are having as they have witnessed them before from being within the firm for a long time.
Kaplan provide as much support as you feel you need. This can be in the form of face to face conversations with tutors at college or Video calls with tutors if you are not there. This support is always available and is very easy to access. Tutors are always as helpful as possible.
Gaining knowledge in accounting from the professional qualification sat through Kaplan helps very much in my day to day role as having a greater understanding of accounting helps in client interactions due to being more educated and therefore understanding more complex areas, that previously you would not have understood, leading to better quality conversations.
There are lots of social events organised by the EY social committee, these include month end drinks that start into office then head into town. There is also lots of other social events such as escape rooms and footgolf that are funded by EY. You can also have the opportunity to represent EY at recruitments events.
Yes
I would recommend EY to a friend because it gives you a great platform to become a well round professional and accountant through continued learning through the form of professional qualifications and continued coaching within the work place. With EY being such a large business there is also lots of opportunities to meet new people and travel to new places.
When applying to EY I would give the following tips. Always be yourself, the application tests are designed to cross examine peoples answers therefore if you don't quite answer truthfully it is likely to be noticed. During the assessment day take a role and make it your own, such as being the time keeper or making sure the team doesn't go off subject.
