One week doing a CMI qualification. You did this with all the other interns and I received useful advice by them and the supervisors to aid my completion. After we had one weeks work experience in a sector within EY provided by the supervisors, working with EY employees and helping out with their tasks.
I obtained a level 2 CMI qualification in team leader skills which looks good on my CV. We had an opportunity to work on presentation and teamwork skills. We developed these during the dragons den activity at the end of the week. We also learned how life in the world of work is.
I enjoyed it a lot as I met new people who I’m still in contact with. The supervisors were really nice and supportive during the whole two weeks and alumni events. I also enjoyed working with professionals as it made me realise that when I start working I know what to expect if I work for a big firm.
The two weeks were well structured as we finished the qualification in time with plenty of time to check our work. During the work experience I felt that I had plenty of time to look at as many aspects of the sector I was working in as I was able to.
I learned a lot about the culture and what everyone expects from an EY employee. I learned that it is not just about turning up and doing your hours every day but it’s about building relationships with the people you work with and the people who you work for.
I found it really useful as it made me realise that I wanted to work for a big firm like EY. It even made me question whether I actually wanted to go to university or go straight into employment through an apprenticeship with a big firm. It also made me realise that I could see myself being an accountant.
I was paid for the whole two weeks that I was there. It was a lot of money at the time and was a big motivator during the two weeks but it wasn’t the most important thing for me. I just wanted to find out whether I actually wanted to work there in the future.
There were plenty of opportunities to talk to other employees. I worked with the GCR tax team for a week and got to know everyone in the team. I asked all of them what they would do if they were in my position in terms of my career path and the information I received was very interesting.
Yes
Because I know they would enjoy the experience and value the fact that a big firm has taken the time to give you a qualification and pay for you to work for them to gain an insight into accounting. I think that anyone who has the opportunity to do this programme should.
Don’t stress too much about the application just be yourself during the telephone interview as it won’t be as intimidating or as stressful as you would think. Also I would prepare some answers to potential interview questions. I did this by bullet pointing all my past achievements and experiences on a sheet of paper for reference.
