My role of an engineering apprentice, is to look after, maintain and fix machinery in production areas at GSK. My day usually consists of completing preventative maintenance work orders but can also include, corrective maintenance when a piece of machinery has an unexcepted problem. I liaise with my team daily to keep up to date on what is occurring in production on a day to day bases, so I can be prepared for any jobs that may unexpectedly arise.
I have learnt many new skills and definitely developed almost all of my skills. for example before my apprenticeship I had little experience with hand skills but after spending 6 months at college working on it I have massively improved and I am very confident In my abilities now. I have also massively developed my mechanical and electrical fault finding skills as these skills are required day to day in my job role.
I love working for GSK and feel the engineering apprenticeship programme is amazing here. Everyday I am presented with new challenges to face and this allows me to continuously work on my overall abilities, improving me as a technician and as a person in general. I also love all the opportunities that GSK offer as there is an opportunity to do almost anything you could ever want.
The programme is very well organised id say. the first year or my programme consists of 1 full year at a training centre, in my case South West Durham Training. this is to hone in on skills such as mechanical, electrical, pneumatics, hydraulics, hands kills and machining skills. the second year then puts you into the workplace to experience what it is like to be a real technician, day to day you shadow other technicians to learn key skills and aspects of the job. the third and fourth year then consist of using them skills learnt in the previous two years to work more independently with your colleagues to help increase efficiency in the workplace but also to allow you tp develop more independent skills and make decisions by yourself.
I receive as much support as I require from my employer. If I ever have any issues or concerns I raise them immediately with whop ever is appropriate. any issues are always resolved very quickly and there is never a time where an issue will fly under the radar and not be resolved.
South West Durham Training are also very good at providing support when required. all the tutors are very understanding of any concerns you may have and are always open to suggestions to improve. if I ever have any issues I raise them immediately to either a tutor or another member of staff at the centre
My qualifications line up perfectly with what is excepted from me in my role at the work place, there isn't a course that I am doing that wouldn't provide me with the skills I need to work better day to day at site. vice versa there isn't any other courses I could think of that would benefit me anymore then I already am.
There are lots of extra curricular activities to participate in at work, such as outwards bounds trips, residentials, trips to other GSK sites, resilience events, social activities such as nights out, charity football matches, networking events with other GSK employees and apprentices and loads more. the range of extra curricular activities provided by GSK is substantial.
Yes
I would recommended GSK to any of my friends as it is a brilliant company to work for, you are well looked after to all your needs. Provided with all Appropriate training that you may ever require in your role and are supplied with any amount of resource required to enhance your skills and abilities at any given moment.
I would advise people to be them selves, be Transparent, respectful, aware of yourself and others integrity. and have good morals towards wanting to look after the patients of GSK. I would also say you must be good a teamwork, and your must have courage and confidence in order to be accountable for your own actions but you also must be always open to more development, as this helps you forever be able to improve.
