My role as an NPI packaging technologist involves working with our new product project teams to create and introduce our new packaging components. This involved the creation of drawings, specifications and online code setups. I am also involved in trouble shooting on our production lines, working with engineers, quality, production staff and project managers.
Prior to coming into this role I had no knowledge of the GSK ways of working, and this apprenticeship has taught me so much about health and safety and GMP. I have also been able to build my confidence since coming into the role. I am now able to discuss areas of my work with project teams, and I feel confident in completing important tasks on my own.
I enjoy my programme greatly, due to its complexity and intensity. I like working under pressure, and so the importance of a new product launch provides me with a level of pressure I enjoy. I am given the opportunity to carry out new tasks daily and so I thoroughly enjoy the new opportunities I am constantly given.
My programme is set out in a three year plan, with each year having specific college and on the job training commitments. This is sometimes difficult to follow due to the fact that training should be completed whenever the opportunity arises, as opposed to in certain years of the programme, however overall the framework does help me map out what I need to achieve by the end of the programme.
My employer is supportive of all of my requests and choices. They give me the opportunity to get involved with any areas of the business that interest me, regardless of if it applies to my role or not. This is a great development tool that I can use in the future. They are supportive of academic studies and allow me to take lots of time in work to complete assignments/study.
Whilst carrying out my HNC I have received good support from my training provider. They provide lots of material for assignments and are on hand to help via email when we return to site, although this can be a slightly slow process. By having a week out of the business we are able to focus on our studies in a classroom setting which is very helpful.
my training provides me with insight into multiple areas of the business from quality, project managements and instrumentation. By gaining an understanding of these theories I am then able to apply that to the work I do. It is also a great opportunity for future development, should I chose to take on another role in the business.
GSK provides us with a multitude of activities through their sports and social club and gym. Exercise classes are held every day for staff to participate in on lunch breaks, and the social club is available for all events. Gym memberships are offered to employees at discounted rates, and includes the use of swimming pools etc. The site here is based in the middle of the town, meaning staff are able to go off for lunch, meetings or walks around the area which is very popular in the summer time.

GSK is a great place to develop. They are focused on allowing you to reach any goals you set for yourself, and will support you in any ventures you wish to take. The work here is important but challenging, and so this allows its workforce to always stay motivated and excited about what we do.
Ensure that you show who you are as a person in your interviews and applications. GSK have values that they look for in their employees, and they hold these values at the heart of everything they do. I believe that if you apply to GSK you should aim for a role that you feel will challenge and excite you.
