Spent a day in 3 departments - tax, audit and investments- and got an overview of what those jobs would entail. I was given different tasks throughout the day that would be similar to what an actual worker in that department would do then at the end of the day I would go over this work with an employee.
I developed my researching skills as a few of my tasks including finding and writing information about companies I did not know a lot about. I also improved my public speaking skills as I had to report back to a group of people aged the end of each day. Another thing I found useful was learning how to behave in an office/professional environment.
I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience as I met people with similar career interests that were my age and I also learnt about careers i did not know existed. Also, the people I met informed me of different ways I could get into those careers- surprisingly, a lot did not require a university degree.
My work experience was very well organised. At the start of each day i was briefed on what I was going to do and everything was scheduled so that I could get a taste of as many different opportunities possible. Overall i don't think they could've done a better job in regards to organisation.
I learnt quite a bit about company culture. However, I was surprised at how different it was between departments as some were a lot more formal than others. I had a few conversations with newer staff about the social life and the work life there and they described it very positively
My work experience did help me in deciding my future career path as it allowed me to learnt that you don't always have to do very specific degrees to get into certain jobs and that skills like communication and analytical skills which could be developed from a variety of courses would be useful.
I was paid for all 2 weeks of my work experience which I thought was very generous, considering the first week we were given the opportunities to complete a management course for free, while getting paid. And I was also reimbursed for my travel to the city and back every day
Yes, there were many opportunities for networking. I was given a mentor and I learnt a lot through her. Many of the people I approached were more than willing to share their emails and encouraged me to contact them if I wanted to know a little more about their career or career choices in general
Yes
It was a wonderful experience where I could first hand experience what working in a business environments is like. I was given the opportunity to see what a variety of roles in different jobs looked like, whilst also getting to meet like minded people my age who were interested in the same career options
Make sure to ask as many questions as you can and not to feel embarrassed. The people are there by choice and will be more than happy to answer any of your questions. Also to keep in contact with the other people from the programme to build professional connections and relationships
