The role is varies from day to day. Common tasks include, completing 'first offs' (i.e. inspecting the first component produced) Reviewing and updating reject records, taking part in problem solving activities such as FMEA (Failure, Mode , Affect, Analysis), Root cause analysis and 8D problem solving. Also, the role includes conducting internal audits of manufacturing processes.
During my apprenticeship, I have gained many skills and developed existing ones. For example, I have developed my problem solving skills. I have been able to learn from experienced engineers and operators on how to overcome manufacturing challenges such as high reject rates or poor efficiency. I have developed my IT skills particularly with Microsoft Excel. Line managers run training courses on excel to improve the skills of their teams. Also, through I have learnt how to use SAP software for business use, this new skill used daily in the role.
I really enjoy the programme. Each day is varied, so work never gets boring. There is always something new that I can see/do that expands my knowledge and skills. I always feel part of a team, this makes me feel that the work I do I valued and my contributions work towards the team's common goals.
The programme is very well structured. Line mangers have a responsibility over apprentices so are well informed when decisions over placements required. Also, line managers know what skills are need in their departments', so apprentices can be ready with these skills to prepare for a role after the apprenticeship. Line managers also take a keen interest in the academic progression and any concerns can be raised with them.
The company is very supportive to it's apprentices. Firstly, I have been able to develop skills such as team working, leadership and communication due to the opportunities given by the company, these skills I have developed due to the supportive environment that is created. The company has been flexible in times during exam periods, giving me study leave to give me the best chances of success.
The University Of South Wales supports part time students very well. The teachers always upload online teaching content to make it easy to learn, even when we are not in the classroom. The open door policy that the university operates is great when I need help on an assignment or when preparing for exams.
I think I have learnt some skills/knowledge that helps me during my day to day role. Firstly, when writing reports for university, it is important to be concise, this helps when needing to explain situations in work. Also, correctly reading and conforming to documentation is a skill that I have developed in university but applies to my role.
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with extra curricular activities. Every other year, all BAE apprentices take part in the 'Apprentice Innovation Challenge' this involves working with charities to develop engineering solutions to problems faced by those who may be disabled. Also, in the 2nd year of my apprenticeship, I took part in the outward bound team building experience. In addition, apprentices get the chance to assist with Work Experience and STEM events.
Yes
Yes, absolutely! I have learnt so much and I am continuing to do so. The apprenticeship is preparing me for the next stage of my career. The company is very supportive with regards to development and further study. I have been able to visit different BAE sites to gain knowledge of how they work.
Remember to say what you can bring to the company. Try to think what makes you stand out from other applicants. Ensure to read the questions carefully and don't rush them. For interviews, ensure you know some key facts about the business. Take a keen interest in developing news about the company.
