Higher Apprentice - Joining Engineer Review

I work in a car manufacturing facility in the Body Construction Engineering Department. My specific role is a Joining Engineer. Joining in this context means the joining of metal, for instance welding, riveting, brazing and clinching. I look after the quality and testing of the joining techniques.

I have learnt so many new skills including both electrical and mechanical principles, I have also learnt about robotics, welding and the use of laser to weld/braze.

I enjoy my job very much, there is a lot a variety from day to day and I am constantly learning new things. It is challenging to carry out problem solving in the manufacturing environment as well as working with maintenance to look after and help during breakdowns of equipment.

There has been a lot of changes to the programme and how it is structured throughout the 6 years of my apprenticeship. Some of these are due to new guidelines sent out by the government.

If I have any issues what so ever I know who to go speak to for help and I am confident they will do all they can to support whatever I need.

I had a lot of support in the first 18 months when I was based at the training providers facility, then when I moved into the manufacturing facility I have monthly meeting with my training manager to update them on my progress with my NVQ and University, where I study part time.

My basic electrical and mechanic training in the first 18 months taught me a lot of information which was then used a lot when I moved into the manufacturing facility.

Because I have really enjoyed my apprenticeship and hope to stay with Jaguar Land Rover for the foreseeable future.

Go for it, it's a challenge but totally worth it and the money is also an added bonus.
