I go to work either at client site or at our own office. I am learning the basics of being an auditor whilst performing audit tests, talking to and questioning clients and travelling all over the country and sometimes internationally.
I have learned a lot of new skills, particularly IT skills when it comes to using my laptop. I have also developed my ability to communicate as my job requires me to converse with senior members of management of the client I am working on. I have also developed an analytical mind.
I enjoy this programme a lot as it gives me the chance to experience the university lifestyle whilst I am away at uni, and then whilst on placement I get the chance to gain experience in the Job that I want to end up in. I also get to use the knowledge I have acquired in my studies.
This programme is very well structured, as my university exams gain me 12 exemptions from the 15 professional exams required to become a chartered accountant. Therefore I only need to complete 3 exams once I leave uni, meaning I am a lot further ahead than any other graduate.
We receive a lot of support from our employer, in the form of our text books being bought for us, as well as time off to study for exams. They understand that we are still students and know that passing our exams is a priority for us, as well as working.
Our training is all on the job and therefore the training we receive is all experience based. We learn by doing. This is good as it gives a realistic view of what is required of us on a day to day basis.
The ACA I am working towards is very beneficial for my role, as it is a widely recognised qualification that will open a number of doors for me, not just for accounting. It also gives a wide understanding of how a business operates, giving us the knowledge to really understand what it is we are looking for when we are checking company accounts.
Yes, there are obviously many extra-curricular activities to do whilst doing the university part of the program. In addition, whilst on placement, there are a number of socials and other communities to get involved in whilst at work, all with the aim of building up your network.
