Worked as part of an audit team for a range of clients. Would consist of visiting client sites and performing a range of tests on information provided to verify it was accurate. We would communicate with the client to get an overall understanding of the financial stability of a company in order to cast judgement of the future of the business.
Yes - learnt the general process of how an audit is carried out, and the purpose. Learnt how to navigate my way around the software/applications used as well as becoming more confident with Excel. Also built my technical knowledge and how my understanding of concepts have improved to help boost audit quality.
At first I found the environment a real shock, as I was put on a tough job with long hours. It was challenging to live remotely in a hotel for 3 weeks in the middle of an area I was unfamiliar with. I found it hard to pick up what I was meant to do at the start due to a lack of understanding of the software itself. I was very lucky to have a very supportive team who were incredibly patient with coaching. As I became more familiar with certain tasks that i had previously undertaken from other jobs my understanding grew and I felt more confident in my own work, instead of looking for constant reassurance. Once I got used to the routine I felt more comfortable and willing to take on more work. I wouldn't go as far as enjoying it all the time as there were a lot of challenging moments, however once I became more relaxed I allowed myself to appreciate and enjoy my time.
I felt unprepared on my first real day working as I didn't even understand the basic function of each application used. With more of an understanding of these it would ease the pressure of the technical audit knowledge. I felt information we had previously learnt in lectures was very relevant and useful, and allowed me to see stuff in context.
I felt supported by my career coach as she was tracking hours worked, and checking in when I had worked an excessive amount of hours in one week. I found other employees incredibly helpful and approachable. However, I had no personal issues myself, but I feel if these were flagged people were willing to help.
We were offered one phone call over placement to see how things were going halfway through. Our career coach was a useful point of contact for any problems we had. We were warned it was a shock to the system, and advised by older year groups of what to expect which is useful. Overall when we are back learning at University they are helpful and are very willing to push you to do your best.
We enter the role with technical knowledge that is brought into context when working on real clients. This helps your understanding immediately and gives you a bit of a head start. We have a basic understanding over a variety f areas which aid all kinds of work performed. Also, you are given tips and advice from alumni which helps.
There are activities, however this is hard to balance in busy season. I feel when I am working for a longer period of time I will utilise these more. Socials are organised within busy season which allows you to socialise with others in the firm. The ball is a particular highlight where you can meet people from other firms too.
Yes
A good place to start a career as they are willing to see you succeed, and there is a sense of reliance on your work performed. Although you may be the lowest grade you are trusted with the same information and praised for any help you can give. Very friendly people.
Be yourself, not all about technical knowledge, just need to be a social/approachable person. Show you have the capability to communicate with your own team as well as the client. Team working is key as information needs to be shared within the team to aid others with potential issues that you may have encountered yourself.
