I perform quality control testing on pharmaceutical products, working with a team to ensure medicines get to patients. I perform analytical testing, including HPLC, GC, dissolution, and water content. I also work with members of other teams to improve efficiency and reduce product lead times through the lab, and am involved in problem solving for analytical methods and instrument errors.
I have learnt a wide range of analytical techniques, working hands on in the lab to expand my knowledge of applied chemical analysis. I am working towards a FdSc (and then hopefully a BSc!) in Chemical Science to support this. I have developed soft skills too, becoming more confident and gaining a certification in training so that I can train others. I have also developed knowledge on business improvement tools.
I enjoy the work that I do, and the role that I play in ensuring medicines are safe and effective. My team is made up of a wide range of lovely people, all of whom are wonderful teachers and supportive individuals. I have recently applied for and been offered a permanent position after my apprenticeship.
I receive on the job and web based training for my role at AstraZeneca, and web based and residential teaching for my course with MMU. The induction was structured and introduced the key underpinning knowledge required for the apprenticeship. I have a mentor at work who helps to ensure that work and uni are working towards the same goal!
My manager is always willing to be flexible to ensure that I can meet the expectations of uni, whether that is by rearranging my working hours where possible, or by explaining the finer points of the chemistry to me. My mentor ensures that work and uni are communicating, and is also very supportive.
The tutors at MMU are always willing to answer questions, and are generally as supportive as possible with problems. We have access to student support officers, should we need them. We also have a year tutor for any guidance we may need which is not subject specific. They generally answer emails very quickly.
I am working towards a chemical science degree, and working in an analytical chemistry field. The course helps me to understand the underlying chemistry of the analytical methods which I perform day to day, helping me to problem solve and improve methods where applicable. There is also a business improvement module to my course that has been especially relevant recently in my role at work.
The company has large networking events which range from days allowing people from different departments to come together and learn about each others roles, to volunteer work and sports competitions. There is a gym on site which many people use. There are many different initiatives in place to help local charities; there was recently an away day allowing people to volunteer at a local animal rescue.

I have recently been accepted for a permanent position when my apprenticeship ends, and know many people who have worked for the company for a long time. There is a huge scope for moving around the company and exploring different options, and the company takes care of its employees. Personal development is encouraged and supported by managers and peers.
Interviews are both technical and values based, so it may be worth researching the company and making sure that you know its pipeline and ambitions. There are many careers events and work experience opportunities that AstraZeneca supports; if you are able to attend these, come and meet us and ask us questions!
