I work within audit, my current role being an audit senior. The role of a senior is as the direct point of contact for management for the preparation an execution of work, as well as coaching of more junior staff. The expectation is that you have obtain at least a couple years on experience, therefore are able to execute more complex tasks.
My skills have developed in every way, from organisation, to communication to confidence in public speaking. Auditing is a job that requires a balance of many skills, especially as the work load and expectations increase. Being organised and determining an approach to how to approach your to-do list for the day, considering longer term work as well, is key and a skill I have developed. Further, given the hours worked can be 50 plus a week during busy periods, I have learnt to try and ensure I fit in a degree of a work life balance, even in these busy periods. Further, my communication skills have massively improved, understanding how to communicate with different levels of individuals, from junior to more senior. Linking in with this I have learnt what information each person may need, as well as how to tailor the information I share with people based on individual preferences, to ensure I am sharing information that is needed and wanted and to increase efficiency.
Although hard and challenging, I personally enjoy my programme a lot and can see how much I have developed and the opportunities open to me.
Well structured, however there are cases where organisation of ACA exams clashes with audit client schedules and leads to a sacrifice have to be made between exams or experience on the client.
In general I feel I have received a reasonable amount of support from my employer, with there also being a facilitation of discussion over mental health, reporting of any issues etc. In terms of exams support, although I have not failed any exams, feedback from my colleagues who have sometimes found a lack of support.
A very good amount of support .
My qualification is key to me being able to do my job, providing me with the accounting knowledge to execute my role, therefore I feel it is key to me being able to perform my role better.
Extra curricular activities are available- however due to the hours worked I find it hard to find the time to join in with these, as well as have my onw work life balance.
Yes
The work experience and knowledge obtained in a relatively short period of time is immense, which will prepare an individual for a good work ethic that will ensure many of those who work at EY will succeed, whether in EY or where they go after. The opportunities EY give you are great.
To have an understanding of what you are applying for and ensure that audit, or the other service line you are applying for is something you want to do in the long term or interim. Further, be willing to work hard and keep a positive mindset.
