  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Software Test Apprentice, currently working on the Case Management System (CMS) for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) . Day to day, I liaise with my test manager who assigns me tasks such as planning and writing test plans, scripts executing tests. Everyday I have a stand-up meeting with the rest of the team where we discuss progress on the project. I'm also currently working towards my L4 Qualification from Firebrand, my apprenticeship provider, by completing project write-ups about my work based tasks, where I have to show competency in different areas.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have already achieved my ITSQB Foundation Qualification which was funded by Firebrand. When starting at CGI, I also had to complete a variety of e-learning videos which cover lots of business and IT subjects such as security, ethics and other professional skills. Since starting in September, I have greatly developed my soft skills, such as communication and problem solving related to IT, and, of course, I have learnt a great deal about Software Testing. I have also put myself through a Full-Stack Web Development Course (Firebrand requires 20% Off-the-Job learning) for which I built my own social networking site.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my job and I love going to work everyday. CGI is a very caring and flexible company which works to suite you best. Their members really are at the heart of what they do. For example, the project I work on requires me to travel to another office a fair distance from my home in Kent, but CGI had no problem paying for me to stay in a hotel every Monday to Wednesday, whilst working from home the rest of the week. Everyone at the office is lovely and the working culture is very relaxed while also challenging and enjoyable. CGI are still developing their relationship with Firebrand as this is the first year they have run the programme, so of course there have been a few hiccups, but nothing that isn't insurmountable. The programme has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy I work for such a great company.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As mentioned, there have been a few hiccups since this is a new programme; the support from Firebrand has been great but some of the technicalities were erroneously communicated at the start which made it hard to wrap my head around what had to be completed on the Apprenticeship side. However, the holes have been filled and the communication from Firebrand and organisation of the programme have been corrected and realligned.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • CGI, my team/manager in particular, are very understanding and know that Firebrand tasks are paramount and to be completed above all else, unless the situation calls for any different (which I haven't experienced at all yet!). My manager, has been amazing and has helped me tremendously when completing my first project for Firebrand.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My learning mentor from Firebrand has also been incredible and very supportive, and has made it very clear that I can turn to her for any issues or questions relating to the programme's requirements and structure. She is always an email or phone call away and without her I would have no clue what needs to be done. She's made everything clear and concise and eradicated any problems I have within a very short time frame.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Firebrand give me the theory and knowledge, through training courses and workshops, to build a good understanding of testing. Then I apply this knowledge in the office and use whats relevant to the project with the help of my manager and test team. I've already put much of what I've learnt from Firebrand into practice which has helped me consolidate a lot of my learning.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I've already been to Thorpe Park, a board-games cafe and 3 Christmas parties since starting at CGI!. Their Sports and Social Club makes it easy for everyone to get involved with discounted events such as air-soft, cinema trips and theatre productions, which really helps members get to know their colleagues outside of the office in a more informal environment.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • A combination of the opportunities that have already been given to me to develop my learning in a real world environment, the working culture and attitude, the different career possibilities and the support are why I would definitely recommend anyone with a passion for IT or business to at least attend an open day with CGI, if not straight up apply!


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • As cliche as it may sound, just be yourself. If you are truly passionate about the role you are applying for, it will be hard for CGI not to accept you; they're looking for students who are enthusiastic to learn and develop, whilst bringing something special to the office.
