I am a cloud engineer tasked with moving an on premise environment in to the cloud. This involves strong client interaction and work with very advanced technologies that are only available with newer companies due to the nature of the work. The challenges that this provides is very motivation and diverse.
All the skills that I have learnt have been on the job. Starting this year, I had never used a cloud environment and this meant that all Azure skills were new. Since starting I have become a junior architect for the project, I am trusted to design the environment with the client.
I enjoy the work side of the programme but i am less keen with the university side of it. All of my skills have been learnt at work and it has not been due to university that I have become valued within the project. I enjoy work and I enjoy what I have learnt but this is not a product of university.
not amazing. Students are placed in a project and left to fend for themselves. Whilst there is a dedicated student team, they are focused on recruiting new people and opposed to supporting their current staff. The university side of it is not very structured either, many module changes have been committed throughout.
Lots. CGI is a motivating company and I am inspired to work hard because if the responsibility that I am given. Though, this is not a product of the student team and it depends entirely on the project that the students get placed into. I was fortunate in that I had a good project that supported me well.
winchester University was very disorganised to start with, their tutors were poor and they had many realignments. Since year 1 there have been many improvements and I am pleased that they are moving in the correct environment. I can access support when needed and this is beneficial to my learning.
not much. I am working with new tech that has not yet reached universities and therefore I am more experienced in the field than the lecturers are. This means that the degree has not helped towards my current role though I have learnt skills that have made me a better practitioner.
There is the sports and social club which is incredible. Employees pay £5 pm and they get access to many regular events such as football, climbing, spinning and board games. The leatherhead site is also situated next to the Surrey hills so there are many groups that run and cycle in their lunches
Yes
the experience on offer is incredible (when in the right situation). The social environment is amazing and there are lots of young people to socialise with. CGI is not a stressful place to work, with mental health being a strong priority for the entire country. The offices are also situated in good places.
for the apprenticeship: don't worry about your skills. I have done many interviews for the scheme and we are entirely focused on your personality because we understand that people will not have many skills that are relevant at this level. Make sure so be confident, outgoing and make sure that you understand what CGI stand for as a business.
