I am responsible for several business accounts (both facultative and treaty) where we work on building good relationships with clients, reinsurers and other agents. This involves part of the broking process (getting your client the best cover and negotiating with reinsurers) and preparing the legal documents behind this, both for the client and the reinsurer.
Firstly, due to the professional qualifications you gain with this apprenticeship my skills and knowledge surrounding the insurance market has improved a lot, because prior to the apprenticeship I knew very little about the industry. My IT skills have improved a lot as I spend a lot of time using excel and other IT systems. Also my professional language has improved a great deal as I have engaged in insurance 'shop talk' and the language used in speaking with clients.
I am confident that I made the right decision in this apprenticeship as I enjoy my role and the people I work with. My role involves a lot of communication which suits me. As well as this the program offers lots of help and support with the qualifications, such as revision sessions and a monthly catch up with your coach.
The organisation and structure of this apprenticeship is quite good, issues are resolved fast it is it structure in a way to ensure you are able to complete your exams by the end of the apprenticeship without interfering with your work. The meetings with your coach and revision sessions are consistent.
My team are very supportive and I work closely with my manager and buddy who always happy to answer my many questions and sit down and talk me through the processes and systems so I know how to carry out my role. They are very supportive within my role and my qualifications as they are able to clear up areas where I do not understand.
The support form my training provider is good. The monthly meetings allow us to catch up on my work life and the work towards the qualifications. My training provider books my exams when I feel I am ready and ensurers I receive the appropriate revision material. My training provider visits me in my building so it is easier for me. also it is helpful to have a face to face meeting so I can get the most out of my apprenticeship.
The qualification teaches me about the whole insurance market, the bigger picture. This is very useful as I came into the role straight from A-Levels where I was not exposed to the insurance market - so this is all new to me. It helps in my role as I can see the process as a whole and understand how my job contributes to this.
There are so many social activities. For example, under 35's reinsurance events which I often attend, these include events like parties, talks and lunches. This allows me to create close contacts throughout industry. There are often talks and networking events help at Lloyd's where many people across the industry will attend. Aon also has some sports teams which are for anyone to join, and lots of charity work that people partake in.
