As an apprentice I work through a folder with set components to make to gather evidence for NVQ. This will involve and or both milling machines, lathes and some hand fitting.
I have learned countless skills over my time spend at AWE. These include not just how to use the machines but also how to set them up and the techniques on how to machine on them effectively.
I love my apprenticeship. Over a small period of time of gone from not knowing anything about machining to becoming fairly competent in the basics.
The structure of the apprenticeship is pretty well set out for you. You spend 18 months on the skills academy and 18 months out on site in multiple placements to find the best fit for you.
Lots. The management at AWE are amazing, all very knowledgeable and very friendly so I know I can go to any of them with a question and they will do their best to answer it.
Support is found in abundance at AWE. All the instructors as I said are incredibly knowledgeable and will explain everything clearly and accurately.
Our college does their best to facilitate our needs but we often struggle as we are only their one day of the week.
There is the recreational centre ( rec soc) which is next to AWE there you can join as many clubs as you like and also there is a bar there too.
Yes
If you are looking to become a machinist then the knowledge and training you get at AWE is next to none. Everyday you work with instructors who have spend time in the industry so they all no their stuff.
Go for it. If you get in you will be set for life at AWE there is definitely a family like feeling which makes the workplace extra special.
