Apprentice precision machinist Review

On a day to day basis I am expected to ensure the correct and safe working of myself and my machinery. Plan and create various different workpieces to go towards my NVQ as well as review them. I am taught by my instructors how to safely and correctly use machinery. Working where I work there are lots of opportunities for extra learning on the companies role. I am responsible for the safe keeping of all my own PPE and first when it come to the responsibility of my own safety. Once a week I go to the Basingstoke college of technology to conduct outside learning towards my NVQ.

I have learnt many new skills since the beginning of my apprenticeship. From basic workshop knowledge and skills to the operation of large machinery such as milling machines, lathes as well as the programming of cnc machines. Being within a machinist role my maths skills have dramatically increased as I am required to use them daily in my work.

The extent to which I enjoy my programme is that I never have a dull day. I look forward to machine daily and even create my write ups. There is a strong bond within my workshop with all fellow apprentices and all instructors. The days offsite at college are educational and very sociable with class mates and tutors.

The programme that I am on is very well organised. The is a curriculum of first year work to help you learn the basics of machining and a second year schedule that requires skill and teaches you more difficult features of machining but never feel overwhelming. We are given various different learning aids across sight from start to finish of the apprenticeship.

As well as a large number of team education we are given one to one support to help us get over individual weakness or struggles. There is a full staff within the academy and while not all related my specific apprenticeship all will give help and support where and when it is needed.

I receive a lot of support if and when required. throughout my apprenticeship I have never felt as if I would be left behind in any aspect of my work form the day to day within the workshop to the once a week at college I always feel supported and confident in my training providers.

There is a lot of extra-curricular activities within my workplace. Often the company will put of educational and interesting working lunched where a talk is given by an expert on a vary of topics delving from things within the company and those outside. Work have also supported me and colleagues in external events such as the building and racing of a box kart.

Because working within AWE is an experience like no other. In the past I have never worked somewhere so interesting, so active and so inclusive as AWE. With so many event going on the site is always busy and interesting there is never a dull day on site its definitely like being part of a team.

Do your research into the company it is definitely as interesting as it sounds and once you see this it will give you a drive to want to be part of this business, this team. There is an apprenticeship for everyone at AWE and every apprenticeship is a door to a job role you could never have ever seen yourself doing, even while studying at the academy.
