  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Oncology apprentice in Translational Genomics. I spend my time in both the office and in the lab. Currently in the laboratory, I am running Next Generation Sequencing experiments, including extraction of DNA from patient plasma samples.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new lab skills, as I started straight after college, I did not have many lab skills, however, I learnt these very quickly and am now a lot more competent. I have improved communication and presentation skills as well as adapting to formal work-life.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme. It has allowed me to develop in many ways and I have met so many new people. I am enjoying my studying and the work-study balance is good. It is exciting knowing I am contributing to real science.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very organised. My study programme is very clear and I know what I am required to complete and when for. I can see what I will be doing in the future as well which is nice. At work I have many different things to aim for which is helpful.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employers are extremely helpful. I know that if I have any work or study related questions that I will be able to ask and will get a helpful answer. They have been extremely welcoming and have directed me towards different social events to help me settle in.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my university. I have an apprenticeship advisor who I see every 8 weeks, however, if I have any concerns I can email or call her whenever. The lecturers are extremely helpful and provide real-time chat sessions incase we are struggling with anything.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification is giving me a deeper knowledge of the theory behind what I complete in the lab. It consolidates my hands on learning, also, it helps me understand other areas of the business which is helpful for my future development.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are both professional and social events. These occur regularly and are an amazing way of both meeting new people and learning more about different areas of the business.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an extremely welcoming place to work. Everyone is so friendly and will do anything they can to help you. I have met so many talented scientists which is really motivational for me. Everyone is so dedicated to their work which is amazing to see.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
  • Make sure you be yourself in both your online application process and interviews. Understand the company's values and ensure you agree with these as they are at the heart of the business.
