I currently work as part of a team with 2 other, more experienced quantity surveyors. My role is to assist the rest of the commercial team, this includes liaising with subcontractors to ensure the project is working smoothly. The longer that I have been at the site the more experience I am getting which results in more responsibility.
Throughout time at college and working on site you are constantly learning new skills. I found that working on a big project has helped me learn how to work more effectively as part of a team and has taught me to become more personable. We also gain academic skills from the college block which helps when it comes to working on site.
I have really enjoyed my time so far. The split between the college block and the site placement gives a great balance of working and academic life and allows you to mix for everyone else who is on the apprenticeship. We have also done activities such as Go Karting to help with team building.
The apprenticeship gives a structured route that every apprentice takes with set times where the job title changes as you gain more experience. This gives you a goal to work towards and makes you feel valued. Once we are on our site placement we are told when our next college block will be in plenty of time.
As I worked with 2 other quantity surveyors on my project they gave me support with anything that I needed whether this be help with work or looking for accommodation as I am living away from home. They also provide a living away allowance to cover the cost of living away.
Overall the college that we attend are very supportive. As we go to college on block release they put a lot of effort into making sure that we are achieving the highest grade possible for our qualifications. We have regular skype meetings with our college tutor to manage our progress.
As I am still in my first year I have only had one block release to college. However, we are completing a distant learning module from our site placements which lets us choose a topic relevant to our site and apply what we have learnt from site to our learning.
I think this will depend from site to site. On my site we play 5 a side football on a Wednesday night with a varied group from all parts of the project. This helps you get to know people you wouldn't necessarily work with often. There is also a company roadshow every year that comes round and shows how the business is performing.
Yes
My apprenticeship has given me the experience of living away from home which may not be available with other apprenticeships. It has given me the opportunity to live and work around the country. I am only in my first year and I have already been in college in Leeds and worked in Hull.
Be confident and outgoing and show examples of why you should work for BAM Nuttall and what skills you have that would mean you are suitable for the role. You should also be interested in the job your applying for and ensure that it is something you want to do.
