As an Apprentice civil engineer currently working on HS2 enabling works my role is to assist senior engineers, whether this is applying for permits, preparing a desktop study or going out to site and assisting them when managing sub contractors, the days a all fairly varied.
This placement has mostly given me an understand of the managerial side of construction however I have highlighted some areas which I felt I wasn't devolving in and Bam have given me some options to improve this such as going on secondment to a site which I could have a more technical role.
I enjoy that the job is different everyday which is what I wanted from this.
The programme is structured in block release and we're given our blocks well in advance which I appreciate. We were told from the first day where were expected to be at each point in the course which was good.
whenever I've asked for any help I've received it usually via email within the hour of a question being aksed.
All the staff at Leeds college of building we're more than happy to help small class sizes helped as it meant whenever you had a question it could be answered almost straight away.
So far I've only completed the core modules for level 4 for the qualification however from these core modules I gained a good base understanding of the industry before I went to work which has helped in a few instances.
There is plenty of opportunities for extracurricular activities both when a college and at work which are presented each week from weekly football matches to volunteering.
